Student Values Essay Encarta defines Values as the accepted principles or standards of an individual or a group. The University of Phoenix has clearly defined these standards for each student in the student handbook. As a student at the University of Phoenix, there are many values that I find extremely important. I have narrowed it down to three for discussion in this paper: Promoting the University of Phoenixs Mission Statement; Consistent Attendance; and Participation in Learning Teams. According to the University Of Phoenix, its mission is to educate working adults to develop the knowledge and skills that will enable them to achieve their professional goals, improve the productivity of their organizations, and provide leadership and service to their communities (University Of Phoenix, 2005, p. 2). To fulfill this mission, the University of Phoenix states it will: Facilitate cognitive and affective student learning, develop competence in the communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and information utilization; provide instruction that bridges the gap between theory and practice; to use technology to create effective modes and means of instruction; improve the teaching/learning system, curriculum, instruction, learning resources, counseling and student services by assessing student learning; foster a spirit of innovation that focuses on providing academic quality, service, excellence, and convenience to the working adult; and to generate the financial resources necessary to support the Universitys mission (University Of Phoenix, 2005, p. 2). To paraphrase from the handbook, our responsibilities as students states that we act ethically with one another (students, faculty, University staff); welcome the contributions of not only students, but faculty and staff members in creating an atmosphere of respect and recognition; foster a productive learning atmosphere; constructively accepting and providing feedback; identify individual and professional values of ourselves and others; show independence and direction in the conclusion of group/individual learning objectives; Be accountable for our actions (communication, interactions); recognize that conflicts/resolutions between individuals/groups are necessary to the team learning process; preserve confidentiality and privacy of personal or professional information being communicated; accountability for group achievements from working collaboratively in the learning process; adhere to the University principles on plagiarism/academic cheating; observe all laws and adhere to the University policies. In order to support the Universitys mission, we, as students, must follow certain values during our studies at the University of Phoenix. Without these values, we would not be able to uphold the Universitys mission. Personally, I uphold the mission statement by participating to the fullest degree possible, putting forth my best efforts as a student, and maintaining a high degree of ethical standards. I also find regular class attendance an important value, as a University of Phoenix Student. Whether it is traditional, online or direct study, class attendance is mandatory and essential for effective learning. Since we are online students, class participation is extremely important. Dr. Wilson states that Participation is very important online. You will be expected to participate four days a week in several different discussions and to contribute at least two substantive discussion messages on each of those four days (Wilson, 2006, p7). Because our class is based on the Active Learning Model, our classroom is a dynamic learning arena. As stated in the University Catalog, the model is based first on the assumption that the learners active involvement in the learning process is essential to good practice. Thus, University of Phoenix classrooms are intended to be dynamic learning spaces (University Of Phoenix, 2005, p. 13). For this reason, it is imperative that classes not be missed or we would not be able to participate in the active learning environment. Another value that is conducive to learning is the development of the Learning Team. A Learning Team is a small group of students, ranging from three to six people (from different parts of the country or world) that is crucial to our learning environment. Learning Teams are an essential design element in the Universitys teaching and learning model through which students develop the ability to collaborate ? an ability expected of employees in information-age organizations and one of the Universitys primary learning goals (University Of Phoenix, 2005, p. 14). The Learning Team forces us to work effectively and efficiently. The team must work together in order to complete the assigned tasks. Working in groups also teaches us how to work in diverse groups in the real-world. In conclusion, the values I have listed only scratch the surface of the value system. Values are a part of us and society as a whole. They may relate to how each of us views the world around us or may be the basis for the laws that govern us. International Business The business world has always relied heavily on contractual agreements while conducting business. These contracts while written in ink, are set in stone. Once your business partner signs his/her name on the dotted line the pact has been sealed and nothing else needs to be said. But what happens when you take away the physical contractual element and everything is agreed upon through one's word? The world of business ethics is an old discipline in most parts of the world, and in most cases, is applied to the everyday business world. But in the case of China, the country of exaggerated numbers and inflated profit margins, business ethics has yet to be fully assimilated into the Chinese business culture. Business ethics is a multi-faceted approach to honesty, integrity, and straight-forwardness in the corporate world. This paper however, is concerned with two main business ethics' topics brought up by Dr. Rothlin in his book, Becoming a Top Notch Player: 18 Rules of International Business Ethics. We will be discussing rules 14 &15 in the following. Rule 14 deals with securing your public reputation by having a commitment to quality and excellence. Rule 15 deals mainly with corruption and it's negative impacts on day-to-day business dealings. Although rules 14 &15 are both in the realm of business ethics, they are very different by nature and therefore we decided to give them each their own separate section. Although hockey substitutes a puck for a ball, it is a sport that is played in the United States, Europe and Russia. Other sports that utilize a ball are cricket, tennis, racquetball, handball, lacrosse, rugby and golf. Motor Motor sports involve vehicles such as motorcycles, motorbikes, cars and other kinds of vehicles that are powered by engines. For participants, motor sports are a high-octane experience that features explosive velocity, hairpin turns and the real possibility of having an accident. For fans, motor sports provide the exhilaration of watching spectacular crashes and vehicles in a constant state of acceleration. From my observation, dylans body movements from running, playing with balloons, turning back and walking all comes in a category of gross motor skills. So, Dylan has fully developed his motor skills. Further ado, Dylan has developed fine motor skill as well as I observed him closely. Fine motor skills mainly focuses on the movement of specific muscle such as our fingers, toes, and eyes, and on the coordination of those small complex actions. In here, children would be able to improve the ability to control and manipulate an object. Based on my brief description, Dylan shows that he has developed fine motor skill because he could hold his spoon, tie his lace, play games on phone and grab balloon perfectly. He also ran after his friend knowing where to run after and this means that his eyes muscles are functioning great to looks everywhere constantly. Based on my observation, his action according to his age were appropriate, he did not performed above his age nor below his age. His actions and movements were developed just right. Dylans ability to perform smaller actions such as holding s poon, using his fingers by playing games on phone shows that he corresponds to his muscles and his fine motor skills. Sensory/Perceptual Development means a child uses his/her sense to get a better understanding of the world. These senses includes hearing, vision, taste, smell, and touch. The sensory perception will help the child in detecting stimuli, recognizing and characterizing it. I observed that Dylan was listening to his mom when she told him not to scream, he even hears music as I saw him dancing for it. This means that he could hear and process what others are interacting or telling him. I noticed that he was constantly playing games on phone which means that he can see what he was doing. As for taste, he was eating the cotton candy and cake at the birthday and I observed that he was really enjoying it. I did get a chance to observe if he had the sense of smell. Lastly he can feel the sense of touch because I saw him turn back when someone touched him behind. Based on the observation, Dylan has shown the development of sensory/perceptual. Dylans ability to feel all the five senses connects to all the activities observed ahead conforms his sensory development. While observing dylan, his behavior was stable and to determine his sensory I observed several times on his senses. Temperament refers to the characteristic and arrays of personality that we are born with. It cannot be changed as we are born with it, It can be shaped or moduled. Temperament is biologically based on heredity and hormonal factors. According to Thomas and Chesss temperament types, there are three categories where childs fall into. There are easy going child who adjust easily to new situations, are joyful and easy to calm, there are difficult child who takes time to adjust to new surrounding or situation, very hard to calm them and keep them under control and lastly, the slow- to-warm-up child who is a bit hard at the beginning but as time goes, its gets easier to handle them(cite your source). Based on Thomas and Chesss temperament types, Dylan falls under the Easy going child because I saw him obeying his mother, listens well when she said not to scream once, he was a sweet boy as I didnt observe him being dramatic or overreacting. Language Development refers to ability to communicate, talk their thoughts, understand and express feelings. There are five parts of language development which includes syntax, morphology, phonology, semantics, and pragmatics. Syntax is the order of words to form a sentences. Morphology is the study that tells us meaning by using one word. Phonology is the sound heard that comes from a language. Semantics is the meaning of words and sentences in a language. Based on the age of Dylan, I observed that he was able to hear and understand sentence and use correct sentence structure when he spoke. Dylans language development is within the normal pace because I noticed that Kids at this age should know how to speak correctly and he was able to put the words together and speak fluently. This means that he has developed syntax speech at his age. Social Development means children begins to interact with others around them. They begin to have a sense of who they are and where they belong to. They start to gain skills to communicate and enjoy themselves being with others. Under this social development comes Eriksons stage of Psychosocial development. There are eight stages to it and the first stage is Trust vs. Mistrust where infant is not sure about the world, 2nd stage is Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt where childs seeks to do things by themselves and parents shouldnt pamper them all the time as it might lead to lack of esteem and feel shame and doubt about their abilities, 3rd stage is initiative vs. guilt where children interact with other children and ask many questions and if not enough importance is given to the child, he or she will begin to feel guilty, the 4th stage is industry vs. inferiority where children mature and understand logical reasoning. The self awareness increases and becomes a competitive. The 5th stage is identity vs role confusion where adolescence develop their sexual identity, some may be confused. He wanted to find out how people decide what is right or wrong. Kohlbergs six stages of moral development is put into three levels of moral reasons. His three moral levels were preconventional morality, conventional morality and postconventional morality. In each level lies two stages. In preconventional morality, childs act of doing right or wrong is controlled by parents or teachers. Children accepts the rules that was created for them. In conventional morality, children will abide by the rules to stay out of trouble and have to society functioning. In postconventional morality, a person tend to realize that some laws and rules are not fair and will break it to find justice and reasons. (cite) . Based on a moral reasoning, Dylan is living by his parents rules, he cannot do certain things like screaming or else he would be punished at home. I observed that he listened and kept quiet once he got his warning. Also the fact that Dylan was there at the party whole night staying beside his parents tells me that Dylan know where he belongs and what type of rules he has to live with. Emotional development refers expressing, empathy for others and understanding feelings. Basic emotions are happiness, fear, anger, surprise, sadness, and disgust. They are daily expressed emotion due to certain moments. (cite your source). I observed that Dylan was very happy the entire birthday. He couldnt stop eating and played all night long with the kids. He was smiling and interacting in a high tone. His basic emotion for that night was happiness as he expressed his feeling of enjoyment and playful with a smile and laugh. Complex emotion includes grief, jealousy, regret, guilty and pride. These complex emotion develops slowly as kids grow up. Dylan has not shown any complex emotion at the party while I was observing. (cite your) Anxieties means a strong concern and worry about certain things. The separation and stranger anxiety is a feeling of being taken away from someone close such as your parents. There isnt any sign of the separation and stranger anxiety with Dylan. He is perfectly communicating with other strangers at the party without any anxiety. Attachment is the close bond between the caregivers and the child. Attachment affects in a way of feeling safe and secure which is really important in developing personality. Mary Ainsworth performed an test called The Strange Situation Technique in order to investigate how attachment might be different. According to the test, the children shows Ainsworths four different attachment styles. Conclusion They are secure attachment style where the child feel secure when the caregiver is present along with a stranger but may feel sad when the caregiver leaves, ambivalent attachment style where the child clings more often on caregivers and when the caregiver leaves, the child gets extremely upset, Avoidant attachment style is when the child avoid the mother showing very little emotions when she leaves or comes, and lastly disorganized attachment style where the child is very inconsistent of emotion such as crying during the separation but when the mother returns, the child avoids.( cite)Based on the Ainsworths attachment style, Dylans age is not appropriate for these four attachment styles but I did observe that he was solely attached to his mother as he was constantly going back to her at the party and interacting with her. Thus, it is of utmost importance that senior management sets up a proper plan for the health and safety procedures and policies for the employees and for the company as a whole. Thus, we as a group would recommend Lunaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Convenience Store senior management to appoint a senior level authority and make the person address the policies and points. (Hse.gov.uk, 2014) Few points and policies are listed below: 1. Educate your staff youre serious about the wellbeing and safety and why. Tell them youre going to make a move to reduce your business risks and the risks to their wellbeing. 2. Set up a mishap and close to miss register and verify your staff know where it is and when and how to fill it in. 3. Begin an arrangement of hazards à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å" prepare a booklet How to deal with risks for help with this. 4. Choose what mo ve you will make to alter each hazard. Will you: Eliminate? Disconnect? Minimize? 5. Bargain with the highest hazard dangers first and work your path through to the less genuine ones. 6. Business Continuity planning A business continuity planning is a plan to precede with operations if a position of business (e.g., an office, work site or server farm) is influenced by unfavourable physical conditions, for example, a storm, flame or wrongdoing. Such a planning regularly clarifies how the business would recoup its operations or move operations to an alternate area. (Wikipedia, 2014) Prevention- Risk can be prevented by having pre risk management planning. This is done by having a group of employees whose job is to predict the future risk occurrence for the company i.e. internally as well as externally. Preparedness: Business Impact analysis- When the company comes up with different contingent risks, it is necessary to priorities the risks by predicting the impact of its occurrence. For example: When a company has a risk of going down in the product quality and at the same time government increases the wage limit, company has to obviously prioritize product quality first. Response: Incident Response Planning- After predicting the risks and also prioritize according to their impacts. Now ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s time to respond by having a proper planning to minimise the impact. For example: There can be a risk of having a fire in the company, this can be minimized by having fire drills. Recovery: Recovery Planning- If the impact cant be minimized then there is at least a chance of having the recovery plan. For example: Occurrence of natural disaster canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be controlled but the impact can be minimized by having the drills as well as escape plans where the main priority of the company is to secure the life of their employees. This statement is valid, because today historical events such as the Rwanda genocide have been labeled as a category of â€Å"genocide†. Trendy words like Internetand The Superinformation Highway are both terms which seemessential in my everyday. When I though disconnect fromcyberspace, and my computer and I are all alone, programming iswhat I deal with. I make small programs, and since practice makesperfect, thats where Im heading. QBasic is an updated version of the worlds first programminglanguage, Basic. With Basic you are, compared to other languages,quite limited, but good results can still be obtained, even as abeginner. I first started to program after one winter vacation, wheremy cousin can to visit. He knew a bit of how to program, andtaught me everything he knew. I immediately became an addict tothe new world of errorlevels, internal and external commands etc. Or a program which asks you how old you are, and how many cigarettes you smoke everyday. Then it tells you if you smoke too much. These programs are not useful because they dont satisfy any of the two demands: 1) It doesnt fulfill any of my needs. 2)Its not suitable for a wider audience. Today, the list of programs I have made, satisfy in a much more professional way those simple requirements. I have made, in cooperation with a friend, a game which tests your short-term memory. There must be a thousand of those on the market today, but RecoN has a very nice graphical interface, and online help. We released the game as shareware. This means that anyone can have a copy without paying for it, but if they after 30 days chose to keep it on their computer, they must send X amount of money to a specified address. Naturally we still havent gotten any donations, but at least we know for sure, that the game has been copied to well over 250 persons, so it has satisfied some demands. So how can programming benefit me in a more practical way? Well, I made one program, which works like an alarm-clock. Its simple, but it works. The knowledge I gathered from making that program, and all the knowledge from all the other programs, will of cause be essential, if I chose to become a programmer after IB. There I will need all the experience, I can get. .
